About Ellen

Hello there!

Ellen ChauvinWelcome to Ordinary…with a Splash of Flash. I’m glad you’re here. I hope you’ll stay a while so we can get to know each other.

I write stories from my home in the Bayou Country of South Louisiana, but my heart and my birthplace are in Mississippi. I am a Southern Belle through and through. When I’m not writing, you can find me digging in my flower beds, sitting on the back porch listening to blues music, reading a good book, or traveling with my wonderful husband John (who also happens to be the photographer for my blog).

If you were visiting in my home, we’d be gathered around the table drinking coffee out of pretty china cups, and eating dessert (because I love pretty china and gooey desserts, and what’s coffee without a little caramel or chocolate, hmmm?).

You’d probably ask when I began writing. I’d tell you that I’ve loved writing since I got my first diary as a child, but this passion lay dormant for many decades. And then my mom passed away. I had two questions burning inside me:

How would I remember my childhood? Mama knew everything: When I had measles and chicken pox, who baptized me and when.

What will be my legacy? Mama left such a legacy of love.

I felt the Lord urging me to write my stories…to remember and see His faithfulness in my life. My ordinary life. And so began Ordinary, with a splash of flash.

And then I would tell you this:

You may think you’re just an ordinary, regular person, but you’re not. You are precious in the eyes of God. He knew you before He formed you in your mother’s womb. He rejoices over you with singing!

How do I know this? After all, I’m just an ordinary wife and grandmother. I do ordinary things like go to work, grocery shop, laundry and work in the yard. Then I do it all again the next day. But I have a passion for God’s word and sharing what I find there.

And this is one truth I’ve found: God loves to display His glory in ordinary people like you and me. He delights in bringing His splashes of flash into our ordinary lives. And those splashes will come when we surrender our lives, in faith, to Christ.

Yep. Just. Ordinary. I hope you’ll drop by each week as I share how I’ve seen Christ in my ordinary. My prayer is that these stories of mine will encourage you in YOUR ordinary days. And that YOUR ordinary, like mine, will be made extraordinary with Jesus.

And when you see Him in the ordinary, stop back by and drop me a note. I’d love to hear about your splashes of flash from Christ!

  1. Beautiful! Nice job Ellen.

  2. Hi Ellen,
I found your site while I was tracking down who from WordPress visited my site. Since I wrote about “everywoman,” I’m wondering if it was you. Just like you, I’m what I call “just a regular gal.” I’ve got a minister friend who calls it “significant obscurity.” I like that. We may be obscure, but we are so very significant. I’m a s-a-h mom who does freelance writing on the side. My days also consists of grocery shopping, cooking so that my husband will have something yummy after a long day’s work, and helping a little one with homework. God gives us so much significance!

So it’s so good to meet you. Gotta go. I’m being called!
    Best regards,
    Stephanie

    • Hi Stephanie! I’ll be honest – I’ve visited so many blogs lately, mostly Compel members – are you by chance a member? LOVE your pictures! Great to meet you!

      Ellen

      • Good to meet you, too. I visit a lot of blogs, too. I’ve never heard of Compel. Thx for dropping by and checking out my pictures. We live in north Alabama. We’ve had record-breaking temps, but my pictures were of human-made ice. I’m guessing someone went out with a hose to do the work.

  3. HI Ellen,

Are you enjoying Compel? I sure am! You have a beautiful blog here and I hope we get the change to mingle on the Compel forums! 🙂

    • Hi Tracy! Glad you stopped by to visit! YES, I am loving Compel, and learning so much! AND, I am planning to go to She Speaks! One question for you: How did you set up your FB page? When I tried to set up Ordinary on FB, it set me up as a personal Page “Ellen Chauvin”. Not sure where I went wrong…

Her name is Bella. We had a Callie for a short while…I write about them a lot on the blog. Hope you will stop in again sometime and peruse some of the past posts.

  6. I like your new about page, Ellen. I wish I could stop by for caramel coffee and a gooey dessert, too!

  7. Love your update! I learned so much about you today. You have also inspired me to tweak my page, again 🙂
